Freezing point depression
Freezing point depression is the decrease of the freezing point of a solvent on the addition of a non volatile solute. Examples include salt in water, alcohol in water, or the mixing of two solids such as impurities into a finely powdered drug.
Antifreeze
An antifreeze is an additive which lowers the freezing point of a water based liquid and increases its boiling point. An antifreeze mixture is used to achieve freezing point depression for cold environments and also achieves boiling point elevation ("anti boil") to allow higher coolant temperature.
